Catfood Software Blog

(Updated 2011-06-11: Catfood Earth 3.10 is now released. Thanks to everyone who took part in the 3.10 beta.)

I’m working on an update to Catfood Earth that will include many commonly requested features such as rotating the image to a specific longitude (something that didn’t make it over from the original Catfood Desktate) and handling corrupt cloud layer downloads better.

Catfood Earth 3.10 Beta

The beta already adds support for proxy servers, allows the cloud layer download URL to be overridden, updates the time zones layer with the latest data and fixes a few different crashes and other bugs.

If you provide feedback during the beta in the form of a comment on this blog post I’ll give you a free license for Catfood Earth. If you have a license for Catfood Earth already you can give the free one to a friend. Feedback can be positive or negative and can be about your experience with the beta or a request for Catfood Earth to do something new. All you need to do is comment below. Make sure you use an email address where I can contact you (this is not made public or included in the comment, I just need a way to get in touch to provide you with your free license). This offer will expire when Catfood Earth 3.10 is released.

With this update I’ve also hooked the Catfood bug tracking system up to twitter. Follow @CatfoodSoftware to see what’s in 3.10 and to get notified as new releases of the beta become available. You can also bookmark this post and check back, I’ll note each new release below.

I hope you enjoy the beta and I’m looking forwards to lots of great feedback!

(Updated 2011-05-28: Version 3.10.0165. Includes a screen saver that shows the current Catfood Earth image and adds support for rotating the image so that a specific longitude or solar (sidereal) time is at the center of the screen.)

(Updated 2011-06-05: Version 3.10.0222. Support for custom image size and location (i.e. for display on a monitor with portrait orientation), corrupt cloud downloads detected and skipped, option to display larger earthqukes first instead of most recent first, international date line shown on timezones layer, improved text wrapping and prevents text overlap between layers.)

(Updated 2011-06-07: Version 3.10.0236. Added volcanoes layer.)

I love your programme. Just a few constructive tips. Could you add volcanic activity http://www.volcano.si.edu/reports/usgs/ for eg. or maybe even a solar monitor, like the yahooo widget solar widgets.yahoo.com/widgets/solar-viewer-mini. providing u with solar updates, as well as a lunar layer. a complete earth desktop basically. allows geeks like us to see everything at a glance. any chance of this happening. BTW, a great programme so far, and I see alot of room for improvement. what where the other changes betwen version 3 and 3.10?

Thanks for the feedback. I've added all of this to the wish list. 3.10 will contain some bug fixes, rotation (so you can set a longitude at the center to the screen), a screen saver and a few more features. I'll update this blog post as I release new versions of the beta (you can subscribe to comments to get notified when this happens). I'll email you later with the free license.

that would be AWESOME if u included the volcanoes and hurricanes?!

i was even thinking of screensaver of the solar system(for the sake of variety) showing our small blue dot in contrast to the rest of the big system and its revolutions around our sun. or a 3D globe revolving with realtime clouds, data, sunlight etc, with maybe a sun and moon on the sides of the screen as the globe rotates...or maybe even allow the person to switch this type of view for the background...i used some really old 3D globe animated background once but it was bad resolution and such a static uninformative background compared to your program.

i was kinda ok with the map rotation as it is now, didnt see the big deal, but could understand why an american would find it annoying.

the solar flare pic layer from nasa, and a lunar layer, i currently use it with your desktop with yahoo widget and yahoo weather app. it gives me this desktop supreme

i use rainmeter as well, with g3xter.deviantart.com/.../BlueVision-V0-2-Alpha-162478234
as my skin. it all fits very well together, when I drop the transparency of rainmeter so I can still see your desktop.

another tip. I was using robomagic earthquakeview, which gave a little sound alert whenever it picked up a new earthquake event. It was unobtrusive and always a nice reminder of the rest of the world. If that could be added to your program as well. Just a small tone. Or maybe allow the user to add a customizable tone. So whenever an earthquake/hurricane/volcano goes off in the world, with the update interval, at least there would be a little tone to remind you that somewhere out there, there is trouble going on

I think, if you could package all of this into one package, you would have something really unbelievable (considering I built it out of separate programs at the moment) and im loving it, and anyone who sees my desktop can only go "WTF?!" (just imagine the bluevision rainmeter skin + sun + weather + moon + catfood earth)

nhb-arcims.si.edu/ThisDynamicPlanet/index.html

another nice interactive earth (bad implementation of the legend tho) but still a good idea

I'll be sure to add any other tips as I think of them. I used to program as a hobby, so I understand the work that goes into this project. It is a work of art. I was wondering today when will you update it, luckily google gave me the answer.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

Wishing you all the best with your product. Hoping to see something to make your customers say "I must have that"

I've just updated the beta to add a volcanoes layer. I like the idea of showing the current sun and moon locations, this has been on the list for a while. It will have to wait for a future release, 3.10 is nearly done.

Hi,

First impression: I love it. I'm a massive fan of the Webcam screensaver (and I mean *massive* - As in I'll often sit watching it instead of TV!), and Earth appears to be in the same vein.

My only criticism is that it took me a couple of minutes how to figure out how to change the settings - I was poking around in the Windows Display settings, expecting to find them there, not realising there was a 'Catfood Earth Settings' program installed in the Windows menu. However, this is probably more down to me being stupid (and a couple of glasses of wine down!)

Enough of that though, on to the good things; The first time I saw the desktop wallpaper with the timezones, I actually said "Wow" out loud. It looks stunning. The nighttime shot looks incredible too. I love the layers, especially the Place-names. My geography is terrible, so it's a great help to have these on the wallpaper (thinking about the amount of time per day I must spend looking at the screen, surely I'm going to learn where a few places are now!). The controls are easy to use and brilliantly customisable. And the whole thing just looks beautiful.

One suggestion - Could you make it possible to add more place names? Or maybe have an option for more detail (e.g to display every country border and name, as well as the existing option? I can imagine it could get crowded!)

Overall though, it's an amazing piece of software and I can see it being a permanent fixture here. Thank you!

James,

Thanks for the feedback.

You can add more places. In Catfood Earth Settings click the Layers tab at the top, then click Places in the list of layers. You can add and delete places in the list at the bottom.

Country borders are included. Again on the Layers tab check the box next to Political Borders to enable. At the moment it doesn't display country names, just the borders. I have an item on the wish list to show a 'country of the day', possibly with some information about the country so you'd soak up something new every day. This probably won't make 3.10 though.

Thanks again, Rob.

Hi,

Thanks Smile I'm checking out the Country list right now (that was me being dim again - I didn't realise that clicking on the 'Description' column brought up more options below! I must be the worst product tester ever...). Looks brilliant, I'll definitely make use of that.

I love the idea of Country of the day, it'd be great if that made a future release.

Once again, thanks for the awesome software. I love it!

Hey,

I've just installed the beta and think it is really impressive. As an international purchaser I've used Crave World Clock for instant check of different time zones. Catfood Earth however, have a much nicer map that looks more natural than the a.m one. It's even so when the whole world stretches on my wide screen notebook. There is some idea that you might consider. It is a weather forecast/radar all over the world, not only in the US, and in wintertime snow reports for ski funs Smile

I'd like to provide more weather radar options, it's a question of finding a reliable source for the data. I'll keep looking and will try to make this happen in a future release.

Hi Alberto. Glad you like it. The time zones can be switched off - some people love this feature, some don't. Did you know you can show the local time for any place? I use this personally to keep track of the time with people I care about rather than the full time zones layer. Hurricanes are usually pretty visible if you have the clouds layer turned on, but another layer with more information could be interesting. I have a long list of layers I'd like to add, so keep following the blog and see what turns up in the next version.
